9 Transfer Route(s) to and from Florence Airport

There is no train station at Florence Airport, but an airport shuttle takes travellers arriving at the airport to the main train station, Santa Maria Novella or SMN for short. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to get to SMN. The Volain Shuttle, operated by BusItalia Sita Nord, allows passengers to pay onboard the bus, a one-way ticket costing 6.00 euros per person. A return ticket costs 10.00 euros. It's only possible, however, to buy single tickets onboard from the driver. Passengers hoping to buy return tickets must do so at the BusItalia SITA bus station close to the SMN train station, or at the airport at newsagents or bookshops (ATAF and Linea resellers).

The shuttle runs every day, even on public holidays and Sundays. The Volian Bus leaves every 30 minutes between 5.30 hours in the morning and 20.30 hours at night. After that, the shuttle runs every hour until 23.45 hours.

From the city center the shuttle leaves from just outside the SMN train station every 30 minutes, between 5.00 in the morning and 20.00 hours at night, after that every hour until 23.00.

Florence's Stazione di Santa Maria Novella (Firenze SMN) is just a short walk from the city's Duomo and other major tourist attractions. The station is used by some 160,000 passengers every day of the week. There are 19 platforms at SMN, a beautiful Art Deco building that takes its name from the Santa Maria Novella church facing the train station's main entrance. The ticket office is in the entrance hall, together with several shops and restaurants and a tourist office, luggage office, post office, station restrooms and passenger lounge. There's also a currency exchange desk in the entrance hall and a bank on the first floor.

Italy offers train travelers several types of trains: Regional trains, which are for short-distance trips, and Frecciarossa high-speed trains. These trains are usually for longer distances, reaching speeds of 300 km per hour. Tickets are usually more expensive for Frecciarossa trains. Frecciargento trains connect Italian cities with Rome and other destinations in the north-east and south, while Frecciabianca trains and Intercity trains connect major and minor cities at speeds of up to 200 km per hour. These trains are operated by Trenitalia (www.trenitalia.com).
